Brake

There are three basic types of brakes for bicycles: rim brakes, disc brakes, and hub brakes. The term ‘rim brakes’ includes rod brakes, sidepull caliper brakes, centerpull caliper brakes, the U brake, delta brakes. In all of them, the rider applies brake force by squeezing a lever on the handlebar that causes brake pads to contact the rim of the wheel and slow the bike. Rim brakes are inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to maintain. Disc brakes are a metal disc attached to the wheel hub and calipers or pads attached to the frame or fork that squeeze the disc. They are used on mountain bikes, hybrids, road bikes, and tandems. Hub brakes are drum brakes that are usually enclosed in the hub of the back wheel and controlled by cables and levers or by the rider turning the pedal backwards. Hub brakes are used on utility bikes and tandems.
